Philippine Vice President faces impeachment vote after congressional panel finds probable cause
The political situation in the Philippines has intensified as Vice President Sara Duterte faces a potential impeachment trial after a congressional committee found probable cause to move forward with the case.
The House Justice Committee unanimously determined that there is sufficient basis to impeach Duterte, bringing the process one step closer to a formal vote in the plenary session of Congress. If at least one-third of lawmakers support the motion when Congress reconvenes next month, the case will proceed to the Senate for trial.
Should she be convicted, Duterte would be removed from office and permanently barred from holding any political position in the country.
The impeachment complaint was initiated by civil society organizations and left-leaning groups. They accuse the vice president of alleged misuse of public funds, unexplained wealth accumulation, and issuing threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his family, and a former senior congressional leader.
During the committee vote, all 53 members agreed that probable cause had been established. Duterte has firmly denied all accusations, describing the proceedings as politically motivated.
Her impeachment comes amid a deepening political rift between her and President Marcos Jr., despite their previous alliance during the 2022 elections, when they won by a large margin as running mates. Their relationship has since deteriorated into a public and political confrontation that continues to shape the national landscape.
