Morocco's Ambitious $4 Billion Airport Expansion Aims to Transform Travel Experience

Morocco is launching a comprehensive modernization of its airport infrastructure, with the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca at the forefront of this transformation. Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh announced a significant reduction in passenger waiting times from 45 to 25 minutes as part of a broader MAD 40 billion ($4 billion) expansion project.

The cornerstone of this initiative is a new terminal spanning 700 hectares, designed to serve as the primary hub for Royal Air Maroc's expanding fleet. The national carrier plans to increase its aircraft numbers from 50 to 250 by 2033, reflecting Morocco's growing aviation ambitions. The expansion will dramatically boost the airport's capacity, tripling it from 15 million to 45 million passengers annually by 2029, supported by a MAD 25 billion ($2.5 billion) investment.

Recent improvements at Mohammed V International Airport include a newly operational international transit zone. This 5,000-square-meter facility, which is 2.5 times larger than its predecessor, can handle 2 million transit passengers yearly. The modernized zone features advanced security infrastructure, including 11 check-in points, 10 automated baggage screening systems with explosive detection capabilities, seven magnetic gates, three body scanners, and 47 control points across 3,500 square meters.

The nationwide airport development strategy extends beyond Casablanca, encompassing several key cities:

Rabat-Sale Airport is set for expansion to accommodate 5 million passengers by 2025, backed by a MAD 2 billion ($200 million) investment. Tangier Airport's capacity will more than double from 3 to 7 million passengers by 2029, with a MAD 3 billion ($300 million) allocation. Marrakech Airport will see its capacity increase from 9 to 16 million passengers by 2029, supported by a similar MAD 3 billion investment.

Additional airports receiving significant upgrades include:
- Agadir Airport: Expanding to 7 million passengers by 2029 (MAD 2.5 billion investment)
- Fez Airport: Increasing to 5 million passengers by 2029 (MAD 1.5 billion investment)
- Tetouan Airport: Growing to 1 million passengers by 2026 (MAD 300 million investment)

This comprehensive infrastructure initiative aims to double Morocco's total airport network capacity from 40 million to 80 million passengers by 2035, positioning the country as a major aviation hub while preparing for its role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
