Trump says US will maintain “total control” of Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States has “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz and intends to maintain that position, issuing a forceful statement as tensions with Iran remain high.
In a message published on his Truth Social account, Trump portrayed the US naval presence around the strategic waterway as decisive and dismissed Iran's ability to challenge the American position.
The statement comes as Washington and Tehran remain locked in a confrontation that has placed one of the world's most important energy corridors at the center of a broader geopolitical crisis.
A critical route for global oil supplies
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world's most strategically important maritime passages.
Large volumes of oil and other energy products normally transit the waterway, making any disruption potentially significant for global energy markets and international trade.
Trump's comments therefore carry implications well beyond the immediate US-Iran confrontation. Any prolonged restrictions affecting shipping through the strait could have consequences for energy supplies, transportation costs and economies dependent on Gulf exports.
Contrasting claims over who controls the waterway
Despite Trump's assertion, the situation described in the report is considerably more complicated.
The Strait of Hormuz is effectively blocked by Iran, while the United States is imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The competing measures have created a highly tense maritime environment in which control of commercial traffic has become a central issue.
Trump nevertheless characterized the American position as complete control and said Washington would retain it.
He also referred to the US naval blockade as an “iron wall”, arguing that Iran has no effective means of overcoming it.

Trump's latest statement comes as his administration appears to be taking a more cautious approach toward Iran while maintaining substantial pressure on the country.
