Messi's Miami to Open 2025 Club World Cup Against Egypt’s Al Ahly
The 2025 Club World Cup is set to kick off with a thrilling match between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly on June 15, marking the first game of the tournament. Despite some criticism surrounding Inter Miami's inclusion, the Florida-based team, having won the MLS Supporters' Shield by finishing top of the regular season standings, was granted an automatic spot as the host representative.
The newly expanded 32-team Club World Cup will be held across 12 stadiums in the United States from June 15 to July 13. This global showcase will feature top clubs from around the world, and is seen as a precursor to the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament's group stages have set up exciting matchups, with Inter Miami placed in Group A alongside Al Ahly, Palmeiras, and Porto.
In addition to Miami's high-profile opening match, the tournament will see major clubs from Europe, South America, and other continents. Premier League champions Manchester City, placed in Group G, will face teams like Juventus, Wydad AC, and Al Ain. European champions Real Madrid are set to face Al Hilal, with a potential clash between former PSG stars Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.
Other notable teams include Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. Inter Milan's group will see them face River Plate, Urawa Red Diamonds, and Monterrey, while PSG, who secured their third consecutive French title this year, will play against Atlético Madrid, Botafogo, and Seattle Sounders in Group B.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed the event's spirit of inclusivity, bringing together the best clubs and players from across the globe. Despite some criticism of Inter Miami's inclusion, which grew louder after their shock elimination from the MLS playoffs, team officials and MLS Commissioner Don Garber defended the decision, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the league's growth on the world stage.
The tournament’s final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the same venue for the 2026 World Cup final, adding another layer of excitement for this prestigious event. With the draw revealing strong competition across all groups, this year's expanded format promises to deliver unforgettable moments for fans worldwide.
