UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin rules out FIFA presidency bid

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has ruled out running to succeed Gianni Infantino as president of FIFA, despite growing pressure surrounding the leadership of world football’s governing body.

The Slovenian football administrator said he was not interested in taking the top FIFA position, explaining that he remains committed to UEFA and would prefer to focus on his current responsibilities rather than pursue a new role.

Čeferin also argued that staying outside the race would strengthen his credibility. His comments come at a time when Infantino is facing increasing criticism over controversial proposals concerning private investment in FIFA competitions and the organization’s broader governance.

Several European football associations have recently expressed concerns about FIFA’s direction, while UEFA has taken a tougher stance toward some of Infantino’s initiatives. The dispute has raised questions about whether the FIFA president can maintain sufficient political support ahead of the next presidential election.

Čeferin believes Infantino could face a serious challenge at the FIFA Congress scheduled to take place in Morocco in March 2027. According to the UEFA president, Infantino has two possible options: step aside if he concludes that he no longer has sufficient support, or stand for re-election and face an opponent.

The Slovenian official stressed that political support alone would not be enough to secure Infantino’s position. He pointed to the importance of support from the wider football community, including national associations, fans, current players, former players and coaches.

Čeferin has been among the prominent European critics of Infantino’s plans, and he revealed that the two officials have not spoken since the current dispute intensified. He also suggested that the situation is significantly different from 2016, when Infantino received strong backing from European football organizations before succeeding Sepp Blatter as FIFA president.

Although Čeferin has removed himself from speculation about a potential succession, several names could emerge as possible challengers. Among those mentioned are CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani and Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

The growing disagreement reflects a broader debate over FIFA’s governance, financial strategy and the future direction of international football. With the 2027 election approaching, the coming months could determine whether Infantino manages to consolidate his position or faces a credible challenge for the leadership of global football.
