UK-Morocco Green Energy Project to Create 3,800km Link Across Spanish Waters

UK-Morocco Green Energy Project to Create 3,800km Link Across Spanish Waters

The ambitious Xlinks project, designed to connect Morocco's renewable energy resources with the United Kingdom, has taken a major step forward by opting to route its 3,800-kilometer undersea cable through Spanish waters. This groundbreaking green energy initiative reflects a strategic choice to avoid the technical challenges of deep-sea sections in the Bay of Biscay.

The project, valued at approximately $20 billion, will harness Morocco’s abundant solar and wind resources in the Guelmim Oued Noun region. With an expected output of 11.5 gigawatts, the initiative aims to deliver 3.6 gigawatts of reliable, carbon-free electricity to the UK for an average of 19 hours per day. This capacity will meet 8% of Britain’s energy needs, offering power to about 7 million households while reducing energy costs in the UK by 9.3%, according to Xlinks CEO Dave Lewis.

Innovative Infrastructure for a Greener Future

Central to the project is its state-of-the-art infrastructure. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cables, spanning 4,000 kilometers, will transmit the energy directly to Great Britain. Additionally, a 22.5 GWh/5 GW battery installation will ensure consistent power delivery, complementing the UK’s existing renewable energy reserves.

By utilizing Morocco’s reliable solar output and steady Atlantic wind patterns, the Xlinks project will support the UK’s energy transition while providing significant environmental benefits. Morocco’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 45.5% by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050 aligns seamlessly with the goals of this venture, as highlighted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Economic and Employment Opportunities

The project is expected to create over 12,000 jobs during construction and ongoing operations, marking a boost to both Moroccan and UK economies. Moreover, this development reinforces Morocco's position as a global leader in renewable energy, particularly in the solar and wind sectors.

Strategic Routing and Investments

The undersea cable’s route has been strategically chosen to pass through Spanish, Portuguese, and French waters without establishing electrical connections to these countries. This approach avoids the complexities of deeper oceanic routes, ensuring project feasibility.

Backed by substantial investments from major energy players such as Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), TotalEnergies, and Octopus Energy, the project has also been recognized by the UK government as a project of "national significance," underlining its importance to British energy security.

The Xlinks project stands as a testament to the potential of international cooperation in addressing global energy challenges, offering a sustainable and innovative model for future energy projects.
