Powerful Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Felt Across South Asia

A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the northern foothills of the Himalayas near a sacred Tibetan city, causing significant destruction and loss of life. At least 53 people were confirmed dead, and 62 others injured, according to local authorities. Tremors were also felt in Nepal, Bhutan, and India, shaking buildings and spreading alarm.

The quake, which occurred at 9:05 a.m. local time, had its epicenter in Tingri, a rural area near the Everest region in Tibet. The tremor was shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometers, and was followed by several aftershocks. The affected region, known for its remote villages and challenging terrain, saw extensive damage to infrastructure, including over 1,000 houses.

Winter conditions have complicated rescue and relief operations, with the region’s high elevation and freezing temperatures adding to the challenges. President Xi Jinping called for comprehensive rescue efforts to minimize casualties and ensure those affected are sheltered and supported during the harsh winter.

In Nepal, authorities reported that tremors were felt in seven districts bordering Tibet. Although no casualties were initially reported, police and emergency teams were dispatched to assess the situation. The quake also caused panic in Kathmandu and parts of Bhutan and northern India, where residents fled their homes in fear.

This region, frequently impacted by seismic activity due to the collision of tectonic plates, has a history of devastating earthquakes. The 2015 earthquake near Kathmandu, with a magnitude of 7.8, killed nearly 9,000 people and caused widespread destruction.

The Tibetan region of Shigatse, home to 800,000 people, was among the hardest hit, with local authorities focusing on damage assessment and casualty reports. Videos from affected areas revealed collapsed buildings and debris blocking roads. Experts attributed the quake to tectonic stress in the Lhasa block, a geologically active area.

The quake’s impact extended to Thimphu in Bhutan and Bihar in northern India. Despite the widespread tremors, no significant damage was reported outside Tibet. As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on supporting affected communities and ensuring safety in this seismically active region.
