Meta strengthens privacy safeguards for its AI-powered smart glasses
Meta is introducing another privacy-focused update for its artificial intelligence-powered smart glasses after users discovered a way to continue recording even after covering the front-facing recording indicator.
Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president of augmented reality, announced the change in a post on Threads, explaining that the camera will now stop operating if the indicator light is covered while recording is underway.
The smart glasses already use an LED indicator designed to alert people nearby when the built-in camera is taking photographs or recording video. The system was also designed to prevent the camera from operating when the indicator is deliberately obstructed.
However, some users discovered that the protection could be bypassed by covering the LED after recording had already started. The issue was highlighted in reports by technology media, prompting Meta to further tighten the system.
The latest measure comes slightly more than a month after Meta introduced another software update aimed at preventing users from interfering with the recording light. The company says the additional safeguard is intended to make the indicator more reliable and ensure that people nearby have a clear signal when the glasses are capturing images.
Himel said Meta plans to continue releasing updates designed to strengthen the privacy mechanism. According to the company, only a small number of users have attempted to circumvent the protection, but Meta considers the additional technical barriers an important part of maintaining the system’s effectiveness.
The privacy debate surrounding smart glasses has intensified as wearable cameras become increasingly integrated with artificial intelligence. Critics have raised concerns that people could be photographed or recorded without their knowledge, particularly in public spaces where it may not always be obvious that a camera is operating.
There have also been reports of users filming strangers as part of pranks or social media content, raising broader questions about consent and responsible use of wearable technology.
Concerns have grown further amid reports about facial-recognition capabilities being explored or incorporated into smart-glasses technology. These developments have contributed to campaigns calling for greater safeguards and clearer rules governing the use of cameras and artificial intelligence in wearable devices.
For Meta, the challenge is to balance the convenience and capabilities of AI-powered glasses with the privacy expectations of people who may find themselves in front of the camera. Strengthening the recording indicator is one of the company’s latest attempts to address those concerns as smart eyewear becomes more widespread.
