iPhone 17 leads global smartphone sales in the second quarter
Apple strengthened its position in the global smartphone market during the second quarter of the year, with the iPhone 17 emerging as the world's best-selling smartphone between April and June. The performance highlights continued consumer demand for Apple's devices despite increasingly intense competition from Android manufacturers.
According to the latest figures from market research firm Counterpoint, the iPhone 17 accounted for approximately 6% of global smartphone sales during the quarter, placing it at the top of the worldwide ranking.
Apple's dominance extended beyond the leading position, with three of its models occupying the first three places. The iPhone 17 Pro Max ranked second, followed by the iPhone 17 Pro in third place, demonstrating strong demand across the company's premium range.
Samsung was the strongest Android manufacturer in the ranking, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra taking fourth place and becoming the best-selling Android smartphone worldwide during the period.
The overall ranking also underlined the intense competition between Apple and Samsung. The two companies accounted for all ten positions on the list, leaving no place for other smartphone brands. Together, they represented around 26% of global smartphone sales in the second quarter, an increase of two percentage points compared with the same period a year earlier.
Apple's performance was supported by stronger sales in several markets where the company has historically faced greater competition. Its sales reportedly increased in India, Japan and the Middle East and Africa, while the South Korean market also recorded particularly strong growth.
The global top-selling smartphone ranking was as follows:
| Rank | Smartphone |
|---|---|
| 1 | iPhone 17 |
| 2 | iPhone 17 Pro Max |
| 3 | iPhone 17 Pro |
| 4 | Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra |
| 5 | Samsung Galaxy A07 |
| 6 | Samsung Galaxy A17 |
| 7 | iPhone 17e |
| 8 | Samsung Galaxy A17 |
| 9 | Samsung Galaxy S26 |
| 10 | iPhone 16 |
The figures point to the importance of Apple's broad iPhone lineup, which combines premium models with more accessible options. Samsung, meanwhile, continues to compete across multiple price segments, ranging from flagship smartphones to mid-range and entry-level devices.
The growing contribution of Asian, Middle Eastern and African markets could become increasingly important for both companies as smartphone adoption continues to expand. With manufacturers competing for consumers in rapidly developing markets, Apple and Samsung are likely to intensify their efforts to strengthen their positions worldwide.
