According to reports from the British press, the Trump administration is considering questioning its support for British sovereignty over the archipelago if London does not significantly boost its defense efforts. This threat comes as Washington demands greater commitment from its NATO allies.

The issue of the Falkland Islands is once again entering the relations between Washington and London. According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, Pentagon officials have warned the UK that American support for its sovereignty over the archipelago could be reassessed if Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government does not commit to increased military spending.

Behind this pressure lies a broader demand from the Trump administration: to see U.S. allies take on a greater share of the funding for their own security.

Washington Calls for Increased Defense Efforts

According to information reported by the British daily, the U.S. administration is seeking to convince the UK, as well as other NATO members, to allocate up to 5% of their GDP to defense-related spending.

London is receiving particular attention given, according to an American official cited by The Telegraph, its military and strategic potential.

In this way, Washington aims to push the UK to increase its contribution to collective security, in a context where the sharing of responsibilities between the United States and its allies is one of the recurring issues in Donald Trump's defense policy.

The Falklands as a Means of Pressure?

It is in this context that the question of the Falklands takes on a particularly sensitive dimension. An American official reportedly indicated that discussions with London were direct and that all options remained on the table to encourage better sharing of responsibilities.

In Buenos Aires, any evolution in the American position is being watched with interest. Argentine President Javier Milei, close to Donald Trump, welcomed reports of a possible American shift.

Argentina indeed maintains its historical claim over the Falklands, the site of a war between Buenos Aires and London in 1982. The conflict, won by the UK, did not end the Argentine claim.

Any potential shift from Washington would therefore represent a particularly significant diplomatic change for both countries.
