Starlink receives 10-year satellite communications license in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates has granted Starlink a 10-year general space telecommunications license, marking a significant step in the country's development of satellite-based connectivity services.

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) awarded the license to Starlink Satellite Communications Services, allowing the company to establish, operate and manage a public satellite communications network in the UAE.

Under the authorization, Starlink will be able to provide high-speed broadband internet services through its satellite network, offering an additional connectivity option alongside the country's existing terrestrial infrastructure.

The license is expected to strengthen the UAE's digital infrastructure by complementing fiber-optic networks and 5G systems with satellite connectivity. Such diversification could improve network resilience, service continuity and access to communications in areas where terrestrial infrastructure may be limited or vulnerable to disruption.

Satellite connectivity can also support a range of strategic sectors, including maritime and aviation transport, energy, logistics and emergency response. The technology provides an alternative communications channel that can remain useful in situations where conventional networks face operational challenges.

The authorization also reflects the UAE's approach to regulating emerging communications technologies. By allowing new satellite-based services to operate within a defined regulatory framework, authorities aim to expand consumer choices, encourage competition and promote innovation across the telecommunications sector.

Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director General of the TDRA, described the license as an important addition to the country's telecommunications industry. He said the decision demonstrates the UAE's commitment to adopting advanced technologies while maintaining a regulatory environment designed to encourage innovation and investment.

Starlink's entry into the UAE therefore represents more than the introduction of another internet service. It forms part of a broader shift toward combining terrestrial and space-based infrastructure to create more diverse and resilient digital connectivity networks.

As satellite broadband technology continues to expand globally, the UAE's decision could further strengthen its position as a regional hub for advanced digital infrastructure and next-generation communications.
