Salmonella outbreak linked to eggs spreads across Europe, affecting hundreds

A growing Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated eggs is affecting several European countries, with hundreds of confirmed cases reported in Belgium and the United Kingdom. Health authorities in other countries are also investigating additional infections and possible links to contaminated food products.

In Belgium, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain has identified at least 306 confirmed Salmonella infections associated with contaminated eggs. Investigators identified the strain as Salmonella Enteritidis and traced it to Laerco, an egg producer located in Kieldrecht in northern Belgium.

The first indications of contamination emerged in late April, prompting Belgian authorities to launch a large-scale recall in May. Initial investigations suggested that the contamination could have been limited to one of the farm’s four poultry houses. However, further testing detected Salmonella in a second facility, leading authorities to suspend the farm’s operations entirely.

A new product recall was issued on August 10, followed by the closure of the facility and the culling of the poultry. Investigators reportedly detected the bacterial strain in dust samples collected inside the poultry houses.

Authorities estimate that as many as two million potentially contaminated eggs may have entered markets in Belgium and Luxembourg. The products were distributed through major supermarket chains, including Colruyt, Delhaize, Aldi and Carrefour.

The recall has also extended beyond Belgium, with potentially affected products identified in France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland and the Czech Republic. Authorities have warned consumers about specific products carrying codes ranging from 2-BE-1073-01 to 2-BE-1073-04, with expiration dates extending to September 4.

Health officials have cautioned that the actual number of infections could be higher than the confirmed figures. Delays in complete genetic sequencing and the possibility of mild or asymptomatic infections may mean that some cases have not yet been detected.

Contaminated eggs can also be difficult to identify because they may look, smell and taste normal. This means that potentially affected products could remain in consumers’ homes unless they check recall information carefully.

In the United Kingdom, meanwhile, authorities are investigating a separate Salmonella outbreak in which the number of confirmed infections has risen to 474, compared with 207 cases reported a week earlier. Two deaths have been recorded, while more than one-third of those infected have required hospital treatment.

The British cases involve people across a wide age range, from infants to individuals aged 92. Investigators have identified imported eggs as a possible source, although the precise origin of the outbreak has not yet been established.

Professor Ian Young of the UK Food Standards Agency said investigations had so far identified links to imported eggs, while there was no evidence indicating that domestically produced British eggs were affected.

Other Salmonella cases have also been reported in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany and the Netherlands. In some of these countries, however, authorities suspect that the infections may be associated with chicken meat rather than eggs, suggesting that several Salmonella clusters with different sources may be circulating across Europe.

Salmonella infection commonly causes diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Symptoms generally develop between 12 and 72 hours after exposure. While many people recover without serious complications, infections can be more dangerous for infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Food safety experts generally recommend thorough cooking of eggs and poultry, careful hand hygiene and proper separation of raw food from ready-to-eat products. Consumers should also follow official recall notices and avoid eating products specifically identified by health authorities.

The latest outbreaks highlight the importance of food-safety monitoring and rapid information sharing across European countries, particularly when contaminated products can cross national borders through complex food distribution networks.
