JD Vance's stances on abortion, the 2020 election, Ukraine, and other issues as Trump's new vice-presidential pick

JD Vance's stances on abortion, the 2020 election, Ukraine, and other issues as Trump's new vice-presidential pick

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, Donald Trump has chosen Sen. JD Vance, an Ohio Republican, as his vice-presidential running mate, catapulting the first-term senator into the national spotlight. This bold decision thrusts Vance, once a vocal Trump critic, into a position of immense significance as he embraces his newfound role as one of the former president's staunchest MAGA allies.

Vance's transformation from a Trump detractor during the 2016 presidential campaign, while promoting his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," to a fervent supporter has been remarkable. After winning a hotly contested 2022 race for an open Senate seat in Ohio, a state increasingly leaning red, Vance spent the past 18 months solidifying his "America First" stance. This includes echoing Trump's criticisms of the 2020 election's legitimacy and advocating for a skeptical approach to U.S. involvement in global affairs, such as the Ukraine conflict.

Vance's potential ascension to the vice presidency would undoubtedly challenge Republicans favoring a more assertive U.S. role globally, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who plans to prioritize this issue after stepping down from leadership next year. Vance has notably opposed U.S. aid to Ukraine, suggesting a deal where Ukraine cedes land to Russia to end the war, despite concerns over Vladimir Putin's territorial ambitions in Europe.

"There's still a fundamental inability to reckon with the limits of American power in the 21st century," Vance told NBC News in April, criticizing his colleagues for overseeing the country's declining relative strength rather than working to rebuild it.

Vance's stances on domestic issues have also drawn attention, particularly his consistent votes against Democratic-led efforts to solidify abortion rights, restore Roe v. Wade protections, ensure federal contraception access, and establish in vitro fertilization safeguards. He has also opposed stricter gun laws, leading to clashes with Democrats on these contentious issues.

However, Vance has shown a willingness to collaborate across party lines, notably co-sponsoring the Railway Safety Act of 2023 with Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) following a deadly train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. He has also supported Sen. Elizabeth Warren's (D-Mass.) bill to empower regulators to reclaim compensation from top executives of failed banks.

Vance's selection as Trump's running mate has reignited debates over the former president's false claims of a stolen 2020 election. In a February 2024 interview on ABC News, Vance endorsed the assertion that the election had significant issues and suggested Congress should have considered competing slates of electors.

"If I were vice president, I would have advised states like Pennsylvania and Georgia to submit multiple slates of electors, leaving Congress to resolve the matter," Vance said. "That's the legitimate approach to addressing concerns that many, including myself, had in 2020."

Vance's selection also means both GOP ticket members have supported fundraisers for individuals involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. On the attack's anniversary, Vance falsely claimed "dozens" of uncharged individuals were detained in D.C. jails pre-trial, linking to a fundraiser for defendants, including Jack Wade Whitton, who later confessed and was sentenced to over four years in federal prison.

As the campaign progresses, Vance's positions on issues ranging from abortion and gun control to foreign policy and election integrity will face intense scrutiny. His role as Trump's running mate adds complexity to an already polarized election cycle, highlighting the deep divisions in national political discourse.
