Zelensky warns Belarus as Ukraine strengthens northern border defenses
Ukraine has reinforced its military posture along its northern frontier as President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning to Belarus over any potential involvement in the war. The statement came during a visit to the city of Slavoutych near the Belarusian border, a region that has regained strategic importance since Russia’s 2022 advance toward Kyiv through northern routes.
Zelensky said Ukrainian intelligence had identified multiple possible Russian scenarios aimed at widening pressure along the northern axis. He linked these risks to areas stretching between Chernihiv and Kyiv, a corridor previously used during the early phase of the invasion. Ukrainian forces, he said, are being strengthened in these sectors to prevent any renewed cross border incursions. He added that Ukraine would act preventively if threats emerged from Belarus or nearby Russian regions.
The Ukrainian leadership described the northern border as a priority zone for defense planning. Security units have expanded operations across several northern regions, including increased counter sabotage activity, tighter control of movement, and reinforced monitoring of vehicles and documents under martial law conditions. Intelligence services also reported expectations of further Russian mobilization, which Kyiv interprets as part of a broader escalation strategy.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko rejected the idea that his country would be drawn into direct conflict, stating that Belarus would only respond if its own territory were attacked. He also signaled openness to direct talks with Zelensky, offering to meet in either country to discuss bilateral relations. The exchange highlights continued tension between Kyiv and Minsk as military activity along the shared border intensifies and both sides signal readiness to respond to any escalation.
