Venezuela earthquake death toll surpasses 4,100 as humanitarian crisis deepens
The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has climbed above 4,100, according to updated figures released by the government, underscoring the scale of one of the country's deadliest natural disasters in recent history.
In its latest official update, authorities reported 4,118 fatalities as of July 10, marking a significant increase from the previous confirmed toll of 3,889 deaths.
The number of injured remained unchanged at 16,740, while rescue and recovery operations continue across the affected regions.
Thousands remain unaccounted for
Although the Venezuelan government has not released an official figure for missing persons, the humanitarian situation remains uncertain.
The United Nations estimates that the number of people still unaccounted for could reach 50,000, although other projections suggest the total may be closer to 10,000. The absence of confirmed data has complicated efforts to fully assess the disaster's human impact.
Emergency teams continue searching damaged communities while authorities work to identify victims and restore essential services.
Recovery efforts face major challenges
The revised casualty figures highlight the enormous humanitarian and logistical challenges facing Venezuela in the aftermath of the disaster.
Search-and-rescue operations are gradually giving way to recovery efforts focused on shelter, healthcare and infrastructure rehabilitation. International organizations continue to monitor the situation as communities struggle to rebuild following the twin seismic events.
The disaster has intensified concerns over emergency preparedness and the country's capacity to respond to large-scale natural catastrophes.
