US Police Release Images of a Suspect in the UnitedHealth CEO Murder
Police in the United States have released new images of a suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Thompson was killed in a premeditated attack outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel early Wednesday morning.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) released CCTV footage on Thursday showing a man wearing a hooded jacket, his face clearly visible. This follows earlier images where the suspect's face was largely obscured by a mask.
Surveillance footage circulating on social media shows the suspect emerging from behind a car and shooting Thompson multiple times before fleeing. Authorities have labeled the incident a targeted attack. Shell casings found at the scene were inscribed with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” sparking speculation about a potential link to a book criticizing insurance companies.
The book, titled Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It, discusses practices used by insurance firms to avoid honoring claims. While police have not confirmed a motive, Thompson's wife revealed that he had received threats prior to his death.
The killing has ignited a wave of reactions on social media. Many posts either celebrated Thompson’s death or expressed understanding of the anger toward him. Critics of UnitedHealthcare cited personal stories of being denied medical coverage. Taylor Lorenz, a former journalist, commented on the social platform Bluesky, suggesting that such animosity is rooted in the suffering caused by denied claims.
UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurers in the US, provides coverage to over 49 million people. The company reported revenues of $371.6 billion in 2023, reflecting a 15% increase from the previous year. Thompson, who joined the company in 2004 and became CEO in 2021, earned $10.2 million in 2021.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the suspect or uncover the motive behind this high-profile killing.
