Police Seek Masked Gunman in New York City After UnitedHealthcare CEO's Fatal Shooting
A tragic and chilling event unfolded on Wednesday in New York City when a gunman killed Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in what police described as a "brazen, targeted attack" outside a Manhattan hotel. The shooting took place in the early morning hours, as Thompson was walking alone from one hotel to another, just blocks away from the bustling Rockefeller Center where the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting was set to occur later in the evening.
At approximately 6:45 a.m., Thompson was shot multiple times, with at least one bullet hitting his back and another striking his calf. Surveillance footage revealed the attacker, wearing a face mask, jacket, and carrying a large backpack, approaching from behind before opening fire. The gunman appeared to wait for several minutes before carrying out the attack, a clear sign that this was not a random act of violence, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The shooter continued to fire, only briefly interrupted by a jam in his weapon. Following the assault, the attacker fled the scene on foot, later riding an electric bike into Central Park.
The police launched an immediate and extensive manhunt for the suspect, deploying drones, helicopters, and canine units to locate the assailant. Despite their efforts, the gunman remained at large by the afternoon. Investigators released surveillance images of the suspect and appealed for public help, offering a reward for any information leading to an arrest.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, shared that her husband had mentioned receiving threats in the days leading up to the incident, although she did not provide further details. Authorities were exploring whether these threats were related to his role in the healthcare industry. However, local law enforcement in Thompson's hometown had not received prior reports of such threats.
The murder occurred in an area typically known for its calmness at that hour, just a few blocks from the busy Rockefeller Center, where thousands were expected to gather for the tree lighting ceremony. In response to the shooting, the New York Police Department heightened security for the event. Nearby landmarks such as the Museum of Modern Art and Radio City Music Hall, along with a dense presence of office workers and tourists, contributed to the already heightened security concerns.
UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, expressed its grief and concern over the loss, stating that Thompson was a highly respected leader and a beloved colleague. The company also noted the tragic impact on its ongoing investor conference, which was abruptly concluded after the news of Thompson's death broke.
Thompson had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and had served as CEO for over three years. Under his leadership, the company became the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the United States, as well as a significant player in Medicaid and employer-sponsored health insurance.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz offered condolences, describing the news as “horrifying” and a significant loss to the healthcare and business community. The search for the masked gunman continues as investigators work to uncover the motive behind this tragic killing.
