UN voices deep concern over US strikes on Yemeni oil port
The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed serious concern regarding recent US airstrikes on a key oil port in Yemen that reportedly resulted in 80 deaths and 150 injuries, according to Houthi sources. The port of Ras Issa and nearby areas were targeted by American forces on April 17 and 18, with reports indicating multiple civilian casualties, including five humanitarian workers who were injured.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that Antonio Guterres is alarmed by both the human toll and potential environmental consequences, including possible oil spills in the Red Sea.
This incident marks the deadliest strike since the United States began its military campaign 15 months ago against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who control significant regions of Yemen.
According to US officials, the attack aimed to weaken the Houthis by cutting off their resources and financial support. The Trump administration had recently launched a large-scale military campaign to pressure the Houthis to stop threatening key maritime routes used for global trade.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out multiple attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, disrupting international shipping. They claim their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s military operations in Gaza and have also launched missile attacks on Israel.
The UN Secretary-General also expressed deep concern over the Houthis’ ongoing missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and the Red Sea and called for maximum restraint from all parties involved.
The airstrikes on Ras Issa occurred just before indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, held in Italy on Saturday.
