UN urges restraint as tensions escalate between Pakistan and Afghanistan
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint and immediately halt hostilities to prevent further civilian suffering.
According to official reports, Pakistan recently carried out military operations along its border with Afghanistan, including targeted strikes against locations it said were being used by militant groups. Pakistani authorities stated that dozens of militants were killed during the operation, describing the action as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security.
The United Nations has emphasized that the worsening security situation has had serious humanitarian consequences. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reiterated the Secretary-General's call for both sides to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomatic channels while ensuring the protection of civilians under international law.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also reported civilian casualties following the latest cross-border violence in several eastern Afghan provinces. Humanitarian teams on the ground are assessing the extent of the damage and preparing emergency assistance for affected communities, including families forced to flee their homes.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained fragile in recent years, with repeated disputes over border security, cross-border militant activity, and the movement of displaced people. The frontier has witnessed periodic clashes, contributing to instability in the wider region.
International observers continue to stress that sustainable peace will require greater cooperation between the two neighboring countries. Diplomatic engagement, intelligence sharing, and coordinated security measures are widely viewed as essential steps toward reducing tensions and preventing further violence.
The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting humanitarian operations and encouraging peaceful dialogue, warning that continued escalation could deepen the humanitarian crisis and undermine regional stability.
