U.S. Mayors Praise Morocco's Urban Development Strategy in Sahara

In a significant show of support for Morocco's development initiatives, Andrew Ginther, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, has commended King Mohammed VI's approach to urban development across Morocco, with particular emphasis on the Sahara region.

Following talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat, Ginther, who also serves as the mayor of Columbus, Ohio, expressed admiration for the King's vision. "His Majesty's approach to developing Moroccan cities, especially in the Sahara, is truly exemplary," Ginther stated to the press.

The visit by the U.S. mayoral delegation coincides with twinning agreements between American and Moroccan cities. Arlington and Columbus are set to establish partnerships with Laayoune and Dakhla, respectively. Ginther highlighted this as an "excellent opportunity" to witness firsthand the progress Morocco has achieved under King Mohammed VI's leadership.

The delegation's itinerary includes a visit to the Sahara, where memorandums of understanding will be signed with Dakhla and Laayoune. Ginther expressed eagerness to meet with local officials to discuss the autonomy plan and explore collaborative opportunities, acknowledging the United States' recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara.

During their meeting with Foreign Minister Bourita, the U.S. officials emphasized the importance of local cooperation and development. Ginther reaffirmed the strategic relationship between Morocco and the United States, noting Morocco's status as America's oldest ally. He stressed the crucial role of city-level cooperation in strengthening bilateral ties, advocating for "innovative, community-focused solutions" to address shared challenges.

Jim Ross, mayor of Arlington, Texas, echoed these sentiments, stating that the delegation's visit aims to further enhance the already excellent U.S.-Morocco relations. "These connections allow us to improve together. This is what we believe in as members of the U.S. Conference of Mayors," Ross affirmed.

This visit underscores the growing importance of sub-national diplomacy in fostering international partnerships and promoting economic development across regions.
