Trump establishes Olympics task force to streamline 2028 Los Angeles Games preparations
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order establishing a White House Olympics task force to oversee security, logistics, and other critical preparations for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The initiative is designed to coordinate efforts between federal, state, and local governments and streamline operations for the global event.
Task force priorities
The task force will comprise members of Trump’s cabinet and various government agencies, according to an administration official. Its primary focus includes improving transportation infrastructure, expediting visa processing, and credentialing for foreign athletes, coaches, officials, and media.
In an email to Reuters, the administration emphasized the task force's role in ensuring seamless collaboration across multiple levels of government to deliver a successful event.
Trump’s role in securing LA28
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted Trump’s instrumental role in securing the United States’ successful bid to host the 2028 Games during his first term. “The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,” Leavitt stated.
Casey Wasserman, chair and president of the LA28 organizing committee, welcomed the initiative, describing the task force as “an important step forward in our planning efforts” and a reflection of the shared commitment to creating an unforgettable Olympic experience.
FIFA World Cup as a precursor
Before the 2028 Olympics, the United States will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico. With 11 of the 16 host cities located in the United States, including the final match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the event will serve as a valuable precursor for refining security and logistical protocols.
The United States has hosted the Olympics twice in Los Angeles, first in 1932 and later in 1984. The upcoming 2028 Games mark the city’s third opportunity to showcase its capacity for hosting a global event of this magnitude.
Key dates for LA28
The Opening Ceremony for the LA28 Olympics is scheduled for July 14, 2028, with events running through July 30. The Paralympic Games will follow, starting on August 15 and concluding on August 27, 2028.
The signing ceremony for the executive order is set to take place at the White House, with Casey Wasserman expected to join President Trump in marking this pivotal moment in the lead-up to the 2028 Summer Olympics.
