Tragedy in Fez: death toll from building collapse rises to 15
A tragic building collapse in the Ain Nokbi district of Fez has claimed the lives of at least 15 people, according to local authorities. Five others were injured as rescue teams continued emergency operations following the disaster that shocked residents across the city.
The incident occurred in the Hanane El Jerrandi neighborhood, where a six-story residential building suddenly collapsed on Thursday evening. The structure reportedly contained ten apartments in addition to a makeshift rooftop dwelling. Within seconds, the building was reduced to rubble, trapping several occupants beneath the debris.
Authorities confirmed on Friday morning that the death toll had risen to 15, while five injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Four victims remain in stable condition, while another person sustained minor injuries after being caught near the site at the time of the collapse. According to local reports, this individual was a passerby and did not live in the building.
Emergency response teams from Civil Protection services, supported by local authorities and security forces, remain on site carrying out search and clearing operations. The area has been placed under heightened alert as heavy machinery and rescue workers continue removing debris in search of any possible survivors.
The tragedy has deeply affected the local community and reignited public concern over aging and unsafe buildings in several Moroccan cities. Residents and observers have called for stronger monitoring measures and faster intervention to address structures considered at risk of collapse.
This latest disaster once again highlights the urgent challenges related to urban safety and deteriorating housing conditions, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods where vulnerable buildings continue to pose a threat to residents.
