Thaksin Shinawatra released from prison in Thailand
Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released from prison in Bangkok after serving part of a one-year sentence linked to corruption charges. The influential political figure, aged 76, had been detained since September and was granted conditional release under judicial supervision.
Authorities confirmed that Thaksin will remain under probation for four months and will wear an electronic monitoring device during this period. His release has once again placed him at the center of Thailand’s political debate.
A billionaire who built his fortune in the telecommunications industry, Thaksin remains one of the most influential and controversial personalities in modern Thai politics. His political movement, represented mainly by the Pheu Thai Party, dominated the country’s political scene for nearly two decades, particularly through strong support from rural communities.
However, his rise to power also created deep divisions within Thai society. Conservative elites, royalist circles, and military leaders frequently accused his administration of threatening the traditional political order. In 2006, Thaksin was removed from office following a military coup and spent years living in self-imposed exile abroad.
The Shinawatra family continued to shape national politics despite repeated political setbacks. His sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, served as prime minister from 2011 until she was removed from office by the military in 2014. More recently, his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, lost her position as prime minister in 2025 after a short period in office.
Recent elections marked a significant decline for the Pheu Thai Party, which recorded one of its weakest electoral performances in years. Political analysts believe the result raises questions about the future influence of the Shinawatra political dynasty in Thailand.
Despite these challenges, the party’s participation in the current governing coalition led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul suggests that the Shinawatra family could continue playing an important role in the country’s political future.
