Bollywood star Vijay becomes head of Tamil Nadu government
Indian film star C. Joseph Vijay has officially taken office as head of the executive government of the state of Tamil Nadu after his political party secured a major victory in regional elections.
The actor, widely known for his successful career in South Indian cinema and his strong popularity among young voters and women, was sworn in following several days of coalition negotiations. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), won 108 seats in the 234-member state assembly, falling short of an outright majority.
To secure power, TVK reached agreements with allied political groups, including support from the Congress party and other regional movements. The coalition allowed Vijay to form a government in one of India’s most economically and culturally influential states.
During his inauguration speech, Vijay promised to focus on realistic reforms rather than making unrealistic campaign pledges. He highlighted priorities such as social justice, transparency and anti-corruption measures while calling for unity and responsible governance.
The rise of actors in Indian politics has a long history, particularly in southern India, where cinema figures often enjoy massive public influence. Tamil Nadu itself has previously been governed by several former film stars who successfully transitioned into political leadership.
Political analysts believe Vijay’s victory reflects growing public demand for alternative leadership styles and closer engagement with younger generations. His celebrity status and large fan base played a significant role during the election campaign, especially through social media outreach and public rallies.
Observers also note that the new administration may face significant challenges, including economic development, unemployment and infrastructure management in a state known for its industrial strength and technological growth.
The election outcome is being closely watched across India, where regional politics continue to play a major role in shaping the national political landscape under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
