Barrick Mining beats first-quarter profit estimates on higher gold prices

Gold producer Barrick Mining reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter earnings, driven mainly by a sharp rise in gold prices, even as production volumes declined compared to the previous year.

The company benefited from a significant increase in global gold prices, which reached record levels during the quarter due to strong demand for safe-haven assets and expectations of interest rate cuts. Prices later eased following geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, but remained well above levels seen a year earlier.

On average, gold prices stood at approximately $4,673.50 per ounce in the first three months of 2026, representing an increase of about 63% year-on-year. This price surge helped offset lower production output and supported overall profitability for the company.

Barrick Mining’s realized gold price during the quarter reached $4,823 per ounce, compared with $2,898 per ounce in the same period last year. Despite this strong pricing environment, total production declined to 719,000 ounces from 758,000 ounces a year earlier, reflecting operational variations across its mining sites.

The company reported adjusted earnings of 98 cents per share, surpassing analyst expectations of 78 cents per share, according to financial data. The better-than-expected results highlight how elevated commodity prices can compensate for production fluctuations in the mining sector.

Gold remains a key safe-haven asset for investors during periods of economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability. Analysts note that price volatility in the sector continues to be influenced by inflation trends, central bank policies, and global geopolitical risks.
