Spain: One dead and five seriously injured in new train accident
A tragic railway accident occurred early Tuesday near Gelida, about 40 kilometers from Barcelona, leaving one person dead and five seriously injured. The incident involved a suburban train striking debris from a collapsed retaining wall, which had fallen onto the tracks during heavy storms.
According to Catalonia’s Interior Minister Nuria Parlon, 37 passengers received medical attention, including five in critical condition. Most were in the front carriage, which bore the brunt of the impact. Local reports indicate that the train driver was the sole fatality.
The accident follows closely on the heels of a major disaster in Adamuz, Andalusia, which claimed at least 42 lives and left more than 120 injured. Spain is observing three days of national mourning, with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visiting Adamuz to support victims’ families and survivors.
Investigators are currently examining a possible 30-centimeter rail fracture at the site, potentially caused by faulty welding or climatic conditions, although authorities have ruled out human error. The national rail operator Renfe and infrastructure manager Adif have temporarily reduced train speeds on affected high-speed lines while the inquiry continues.
Officials emphasize transparency, promising a thorough investigation into this latest railway tragedy.
