Spain introduces new public transport rates and discounts for 2025

Spain's free train and bus travel program, which began over three years ago, officially ends today. Starting July 1st, 2025, commuters will transition to a new system of discounted fares and passes as the government rolls out revised public transport rates.

The end of free travel

Introduced during the Russia-Ukraine war and a period of high inflation, the free travel initiative aimed to ease the cost of living crisis for families. It covered commuter trains (Cercanías), mid-distance services (Media Distancia), and select buses. While the new pricing structure still offers discounts compared to pre-2021 fares, many commuters accustomed to free travel may find the changes significant.

New public transport discounts

The Spanish government has introduced a range of discounts and passes to ensure affordability:

AVANT high-speed medium-distance trains: 50% discount for all users.

10-trip passes: Available for commuter trains, conventional medium-distance trains, and interregional buses with a 40% discount.

Urban and intercity buses: Youth passes receive a 50% discount, while other passes offer at least 40% off.

Rental bikes: 50% discount.

Free travel in specific regions: Public transport will remain free in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. Elsewhere, it will only be free for children under 15.

New train ticket options

Renfe has announced updated train passes for Cercanías and Rodalies regional commuter networks, available from July 1st:

10-trip ticket: Valid for one year, this pass can be used by multiple travelers (with the same origin and destination). Prices vary based on the number of travel zones. Tickets can be purchased up to 15 days before their start date.

Monthly pass: Costing €20, this pass allows unlimited travel for one person and can be added to the Renfe&Tu Rodalies contactless card. Purchasers must provide a DNI/NIE or passport and a valid phone number.

Youth monthly pass: Priced at €10, this pass is available to individuals born between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 2010. A registration code from the Ministry of Transport is required. The pass allows unlimited travel for one month.

Free child travel: Children born between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2025, can travel for free but must have a registration code obtained online.

Regional efforts

Some regions, such as Madrid, have already introduced additional discounted travel passes, while others are considering similar measures. Renfe has confirmed that full terms and conditions for the new passes will be announced soon.

The changes mark a new era for Spanish public transport, with a focus on balancing affordability and sustainability while ending the prolonged period of free travel.
