Morocco upgrades urban transport with 257 new buses under nationwide program
Morocco has bolstered its urban transport infrastructure with the arrival of 257 new buses at the Port of Casablanca. This marks the first phase of the 2025–2029 Urban Public Transport by Bus Program, a nationwide initiative aimed at modernizing mobility and enhancing public transport services across 84 cities and urban areas.
A step toward modern mobility
The newly delivered buses will immediately benefit key cities, including Marrakech (49 buses), Agadir (40), Tangier (56), Tetouan (68), and Benslimane (44). According to Abdelaaziz Fares, Director General of the Local Development Company (SDL) Marrakech Mobility, the rollout is part of a collaborative model developed by the Interior Ministry and local authorities to improve urban transport networks.
“The Marrakech Transport group received 49 buses, with an additional 97 vehicles expected by early November, bringing the total fleet to 207,” Fares stated. He emphasized that the buses will address rising demand while improving service quality and capacity.
Features and smart solutions for passengers
Before entering service, the buses will undergo logistical preparations, including the installation of intelligent systems for efficient fleet management. These systems will allow real-time data sharing between the Interior Ministry, local authorities, and operators, ensuring smooth operations.
Passengers will benefit from modern features such as real-time updates on routes, schedules, and line frequencies. Ticketing will be simplified through websites, vending machines, and mobile applications, providing a seamless experience for users.
A nationwide transformation
The Urban Public Transport by Bus Program has an allocated budget of MAD 11 billion ($1.06 billion) and aims to deploy nearly 3,800 buses across the country. The initiative also includes the implementation of intelligent management systems and passenger information platforms, setting a new standard for sustainable urban mobility in Morocco.
Spanning 37 delegated authorities and covering 84 cities, the program underscores the government’s commitment to developing a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport network. By prioritizing advanced governance and technology, Morocco aims to redefine urban mobility and meet the growing needs of its urban population.
