South Korea flags unauthorized data transfers by DeepSeek

South Korea’s data protection authority has accused the Chinese AI firm DeepSeek of transferring user data and prompt content without obtaining user consent. This occurred while the DeepSeek application was still accessible for download on South Korean app platforms.

The company has not yet responded to media requests for comment. Earlier in February, the South Korean agency had already halted new downloads of the app after DeepSeek admitted it had failed to comply with certain data protection regulations.

On Thursday, the authority revealed that DeepSeek had sent user-entered prompts, as well as device, network, and application data, to the Chinese firm Beijing Volcano Engine Technology Co. Ltd. DeepSeek reportedly justified this action by claiming it was meant to enhance user experience, and it has since blocked the transmission of prompt content as of April 10.

In response, the South Korean agency announced it would issue a corrective recommendation, demanding DeepSeek delete all prompt data shared with Volcano Engine and establish a clear legal basis for any future cross-border transfers of personal information.
