Royal pardon benefits 19,673 convicts during Morocco's Throne Day celebrations
His Majesty King Mohammed VI has extended royal pardons to 19,673 individuals in Morocco to mark the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne, a key highlight of the nation’s annual Throne Day celebrations.
The Justice Ministry announced on Tuesday that 2,415 people were granted standard pardons, while an additional 17,258 convicts benefited from exceptional clemency measures. Among those receiving standard pardons, 2,239 individuals are currently incarcerated, including five who had life sentences commuted to fixed terms and 2,218 who had sentences reduced. Another 176 individuals outside detention also received pardons, encompassing total forgiveness of sentences, fines, or a combination of both.
The exceptional clemency initiative saw 17,121 inmates pardoned for remaining sentences and fines, while 114 prisoners had life sentences reduced to fixed terms. In a significant move, 23 death row inmates had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, reflecting a commitment to progressive reform.
This humanitarian measure aligns with Morocco’s tradition of issuing royal pardons during major national and religious holidays, symbolizing clemency and reconciliation.
A reign marked by reforms and achievements
Beyond the royal pardon, Throne Day commemorates His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s 26-year reign, characterized by sweeping reforms in infrastructure, renewable energy, and industrial growth. The monarch has prioritized reducing socioeconomic disparities and fostering sustainable development across the nation.
Under his leadership, Morocco has expanded its high-speed rail network, developed highway infrastructure, and emerged as a regional hub for green energy. The country has also bolstered its diplomatic stance on Sahara, with its Autonomy Plan gaining support from key global powers, including the US, Spain, France, and the UK.
Upcoming Throne Day events
The celebrations continue with a royal address to the nation, where HM King Mohammed VI is expected to outline future priorities in governance and development. Additionally, he will preside over a reception in M’diq and a swearing-in ceremony for new officers at the Royal Palace in Tetouan. The traditional allegiance ceremony will conclude the national festivities.
As Morocco marks a quarter-century under HM King Mohammed VI’s leadership, the royal pardon initiative stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to justice, social cohesion, and progressive reform.
