Ebola death toll rises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is continuing to take a heavy toll, with the country's health authorities reporting a sharp rise in confirmed infections and deaths. The latest figures underline the serious challenges facing efforts to contain the virus in a country already dealing with prolonged armed conflict and significant humanitarian needs.
According to the Congolese Ministry of Communication and Media, the number of confirmed Ebola infections reached 7,258 as of September 13, including 3,510 deaths. The reported case-fatality rate stands at 48.4 percent, highlighting the severity of the outbreak and the risks associated with delayed diagnosis and treatment.
The outbreak is unfolding in an environment that complicates the work of health authorities and humanitarian organizations. Several parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have experienced years of insecurity, making it more difficult to reach affected communities, establish treatment facilities and maintain effective disease-surveillance systems.
The United Nations had previously warned that additional resources were urgently needed to contain the outbreak. In August, the organization stressed that the epidemic was spreading in an area affected by decades of armed conflict, where humanitarian needs remain particularly severe.

Research published in Nature Medicine indicated that the epidemic was linked to a previously unidentified strain of Bundibugyo virus, with researchers suggesting that the virus may have crossed from an animal host into humans.

Scientists have repeatedly warned that zoonotic diseases can emerge when viruses circulating in animals acquire the ability to infect humans.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has extensive experience responding to Ebola outbreaks. Health authorities and international partners have developed specialized expertise in surveillance, infection prevention, vaccination and clinical care. However, the scale and location of the latest outbreak present additional logistical and security challenges.
The regional dimension is also a concern. The World Health Organization declared in May 2026 that the epidemiological situation involving the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda represented an emergency with the potential to affect neighboring countries, while assessing the regional risk as high.
Cross-border surveillance is therefore essential as authorities seek to prevent infected individuals or contacts from carrying the virus into other countries. Cooperation between governments, health agencies and humanitarian organizations remains critical, particularly in areas where population movements are influenced by conflict and displacement.
The latest figures are likely to increase pressure for additional international assistance, including medical supplies, trained personnel, laboratory capacity and funding for community-based response operations. Public awareness is equally important, as early reporting of suspected infections can improve the chances of successful treatment and reduce further transmission.
The situation demonstrates how infectious disease outbreaks can become significantly more difficult to control when they occur alongside conflict, displacement and limited access to healthcare. For the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its international partners, containing Ebola will depend not only on medical intervention but also on sustained humanitarian access and regional coordination.
