Royal Air Maroc leads with 100% electric vehicle fleet

Royal Air Maroc (RAM) takes a significant step in its environmental policy by becoming the first Moroccan company to adopt a fully electric vehicle fleet. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing the group's ecological impact and modernizing its infrastructure.

In a recent statement, the national airline announced the gradual replacement of its thermal-engine vehicles with electric models. The initial phase of this transition has been successfully implemented, affecting not only the airline but also its subsidiaries, RAM Handling and RAM Express.

Significant carbon footprint reduction

Through this transition, RAM claims it can decrease its carbon footprint by approximately 400 tons per year. In addition to its positive ecological impact, this change is expected to optimize fleet management and reduce operating costs.

During this initial phase, nearly 200 electric vehicles, including compact and utility models, have been added to the fleet. For their acquisition, RAM collaborated with "Leader Location," a subsidiary of the Auto-Hall group, in a long-term leasing agreement.

Extensive coverage across the territory

The electric vehicle fleet of RAM is now operational at several strategic sites, including the company’s headquarters in Casablanca and various airports across Morocco, such as Rabat, Oujda, Fès, Agadir, Marrakech, Dakhla, Laâyoune, Al Hoceima, Tétouan, Errachidia, Essaouira, Tanger, and Nador.

A second phase is already planned to integrate airport assistance vehicles into this energy transition.

A project supported by adapted infrastructure

To facilitate this transformation, RAM has established a network of charging stations, with nearly 70 installations across its various sites. Most of these stations operate on solar energy, further confirming the group’s commitment to renewable energies.

Additionally, RAM has implemented a solution that allows users to charge their vehicles at equipped stations during inter-city travels. This arrangement ensures greater flexibility and optimizes costs related to charging.

Ambition aligned with the company’s CSR policy

The CEO of RAM, Hamid Addou, praised this major advancement, stating, "We are very pleased today to realize one of our key objectives as part of our proactive approach to combat climate change." He reaffirmed the airline's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), emphasizing that "this important action aligns with our CSR commitments, which we will continue to pursue and strengthen to achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050."

In this context, RAM has invested not only in electrifying its fleet but also in the necessary infrastructure to support this transition.

Internationally recognized ecological initiatives

The electrification of RAM's vehicle fleet is part of a larger program aimed at reducing the group's carbon footprint. Among its other notable initiatives are the production of electricity through photovoltaic panels, reductions in energy consumption at its facilities, and the implementation of waste sorting and recycling systems.

The airline has already made history by operating the first carbon-neutral flight departing from Africa, powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as well as the first sustainable flight connecting Africa to Europe.

These efforts have garnered several certifications and accolades, including the CSR label from the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM). Furthermore, two buildings operated by RAM, including an industrial hangar, are the first in Africa to receive the LEED Gold environmental certification.

With this ambitious transition, RAM asserts its role as a pioneer in the ecological transformation of the Moroccan aviation sector, marking a significant milestone towards a more sustainable aviation industry.
