At least 51 people killed in boat accident in northwestern Nigeria
At least 51 people have died after a boat capsized in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto State, according to local authorities, while rescue teams continue searching the river for possible survivors and additional victims.
The accident occurred in the Goronyo area, where the vessel reportedly sank shortly after setting off. Local accounts indicate that the boat was carrying more passengers than its safe capacity, raising concerns about overloading as a possible factor in the tragedy.
Ibrahim Musa, a former member of the Gorau village council, said that 46 bodies had been recovered and buried, while five additional bodies were later retrieved from the river.
Authorities have continued rescue operations and are still working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Dahir Kori, a spokesperson for Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency in Sokoto State, said officials were collecting further information as the search operation continued.
Boat accidents are a recurring problem in several parts of Nigeria, particularly on inland waterways. Overcrowding, inadequate maintenance, poor enforcement of safety regulations and a lack of appropriate safety equipment are frequently cited as contributing factors.
The risks can become particularly serious during Nigeria’s rainy season, when heavy rainfall and flooding increase water levels and make navigation more difficult. Sokoto and other northern states can face additional challenges when waterways become swollen and currents become stronger.
The latest accident has once again highlighted concerns over safety standards on Nigeria’s inland waterways and the need for stronger enforcement of passenger limits and navigation regulations.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are expected to provide further details about the number of people who were aboard the vessel and the circumstances that led to its sinking.
