Despite rapid growth, public enthusiasm for artificial intelligence is fading
Artificial intelligence continues to advance at remarkable speed, but its growing presence in everyday life is not necessarily translating into greater public enthusiasm. In the United States, concerns about employment, privacy, reliability and the broader social impact of AI are increasingly shaping public attitudes toward the technology.
Recent surveys indicate that apprehension is becoming more widespread. A Pew Research Center survey found that 52% of Americans were more concerned than excited about the growing use of artificial intelligence in daily life, compared with 37% in 2021. Other polling has similarly shown that many Americans believe AI is developing faster than society can comfortably adapt to it.
The growing skepticism is also being felt in the business world. Technology companies are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure, particularly large data centers, but local communities have increasingly questioned their environmental and economic costs. Issues such as electricity consumption, water use, employment and pressure on local infrastructure have become important parts of the debate.
In some areas, technology companies have responded by offering communities financial incentives, job commitments and investments in local infrastructure. Such measures reflect the growing recognition that public acceptance cannot simply be assumed as AI becomes more widespread.
For many consumers, artificial intelligence is encountered through chatbots, AI-powered search engines and automated features integrated into everyday products. Email services, televisions, smartphones and other devices are increasingly incorporating AI tools, sometimes without users actively requesting them.
The education sector has also become a major source of debate. While AI can help students research subjects and organize information, educators have raised concerns about academic dishonesty and the use of generative tools to produce assignments. This has prompted schools and universities to reconsider how students are assessed and how technological tools should be used in education.
Another source of public concern involves intellectual property. Generative AI systems can produce text, images, music and video after being trained on enormous quantities of material created by humans. Questions over copyright, compensation and consent have therefore become central to the debate surrounding the technology.
At the same time, some younger consumers appear increasingly interested in technologies that offer an alternative to an always-connected digital environment. Interest in basic phones, compact digital cameras, physical media and traditional hobbies has grown in some communities, reflecting a broader desire for simpler and more tangible experiences.
The reaction has challenged an assumption that has long existed in the technology industry: that people will automatically embrace AI simply because it becomes ubiquitous. Instead, widespread availability may not be enough to convince consumers that the technology improves their lives.
The central issue may therefore be less about communication and more about the quality of the products being offered. Consumers may understand what AI is capable of while still questioning whether its benefits justify the economic, social and personal costs associated with its expansion.
For AI companies, the challenge is to demonstrate practical value rather than simply promote the technology's potential. Useful applications that save people significant time, reduce costs or improve access to important services could help rebuild confidence.
Some technology leaders have already acknowledged the problem. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has argued that the industry needs to create products that ordinary people genuinely appreciate rather than relying solely on ambitious promises about the future.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also recognized that public trust remains a major challenge for the AI sector. He has argued that companies must demonstrate tangible benefits and deliver on their promises if they want people to become more confident in the technology.
The future of artificial intelligence may therefore depend not only on technical progress, but also on whether companies can prove that AI provides meaningful benefits to society. As the technology becomes more powerful, public acceptance will increasingly depend on trust, transparency and practical results.
