Rockstar confirms data breach as hackers set ransom deadline

Rockstar Games has confirmed a data breach linked to the hacking group ShinyHunters, which is threatening to release stolen information unless a ransom is paid by April 14.

The studio behind Grand Theft Auto VI said that a “limited amount of internal non sensitive information” was accessed through a breach involving a third-party service provider. The company stated that the incident does not affect its operations or player data.

The intrusion did not directly target Rockstar’s own systems. According to reports from IGN and Kotaku, attackers exploited a vulnerability in Anodot, a platform used to monitor cloud costs. By obtaining authentication tokens, the hackers gained access to Rockstar’s environment hosted on Snowflake. Because the tokens appeared legitimate, the breach was difficult to detect. The incident is believed to be part of a broader compromise affecting multiple Anodot clients.

The hackers have not disclosed the exact nature of the stolen data. However, reports suggest it may include financial records, marketing plans, player spending analysis, and internal contracts. These are corporate-level materials rather than sensitive personal data such as passwords or user credentials. Tom's Hardware noted that Rockstar’s description of the data as non critical may signal that the company does not intend to pay the ransom, though it could also reflect an effort to limit concern.

This marks the second major cybersecurity incident involving Rockstar in recent years. In 2022, a hacker linked to the Lapsus$ group leaked more than 90 early development clips of Grand Theft Auto VI. The attacker, Arion Kurtaj, was later ordered by a UK court to undergo indefinite psychiatric detention.

Unlike the 2022 breach, the current incident does not appear to involve game assets or source code. Analysts do not expect it to affect the scheduled release of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026. With the ransom deadline approaching, Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive must decide how to respond.
