Rising Conflict: Israel Targets Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon After Rocket Barrage
Israel conducted airstrikes on more than 10 locations in southern Lebanon early Thursday, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. This military action was a direct response to over 50 rockets and multiple drones launched by Hezbollah into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, which caused property damage and left one person injured.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed that the overnight strikes targeted key Hezbollah assets, including weapons depots, military installations, and a launcher. The precision strikes aimed to weaken the capabilities of the Lebanese militant group.
Hezbollah's assault on Wednesday followed an Israeli airstrike deep within Lebanon the night before, which resulted in one death and 19 injuries. This exchange underscores the volatile situation in the region, where retaliation can quickly spiral into broader conflict.
The timing of Israel's retaliatory strikes is significant, occurring just hours after a crucial phone conversation between U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Vice President Kamala Harris also participated in the call, where Biden stressed the importance of finalizing a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and securing the release of hostages. A White House statement highlighted the "urgency of bringing the ceasefire and hostage release deal to closure" and mentioned upcoming talks in Cairo aimed at resolving remaining issues.
This diplomatic push comes amid ongoing efforts by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met with mediators from Egypt and Qatar on Tuesday. Despite these efforts, both Hamas and Israel have expressed doubts about the possibility of an immediate pause in the Gaza conflict.
Netanyahu's office reiterated Israel's commitment to achieving its war objectives as outlined by the security cabinet, including neutralizing the threat posed by Gaza. The statement also denied an Israeli television report claiming that Israel had dropped its demand to keep troops in the Philadelphi Corridor, a contentious area along the Gaza-Egypt border.
Hamas, in turn, reiterated its demands after talks with Palestinian Islamic Jihad officials, calling for an end to Israel's military operations in Gaza, a full withdrawal, and a prisoner exchange deal.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen. Palestinian health officials reported at least 50 fatalities from Israeli airstrikes within a 24-hour period. The Israeli military responded that its forces had targeted about 30 sites across Gaza, including tunnels, launch sites, and an observation post. They also reported killing dozens of armed fighters and seizing weapons.
The conflict has had a devastating impact on Gaza. Palestinian health authorities report that more than 40,000 people have died since Israel's military campaign began in October. The war was ignited on October 7 when Hamas launched a deadly assault on Israeli communities and military bases, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the taking of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures.
As tensions persist across multiple fronts, the international community remains on edge, hoping for a diplomatic breakthrough that could end the violence and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
