Renfe replaces low-cost Avlo trains with premium Ave services on Madrid-Barcelona route

Spain's national rail operator Renfe has announced the discontinuation of its low-cost Avlo services on the Madrid-Zaragoza-Barcelona high-speed line, effective September 8. These will be replaced by its premium Ave trains, while maintaining the same frequencies, schedules, and competitive pricing.

Renfe stated that the decision reflects the Ave’s superior suitability for this route, which caters heavily to corporate travelers. The Ave trains offer enhanced comfort with wider seats and increased space, aligning better with passenger needs. Concerns about Avlo trains’ reliability on this route may have also influenced the move, as the Talgo 106 models have faced scrutiny compared to the Ave’s model 103 trains.

Addressing fears of price hikes, Renfe clarified that ticket costs will remain largely unaffected, as variations depend on schedules and demand. Customers with Avlo bookings after September 7 will be transferred to Ave services under the same conditions, with refunds provided for seat selection fees.

Renfe initially launched Avlo in 2021 following the deregulation of Spain's rail network, which introduced competition from budget operators Ouigo and Iryo on the Madrid-Barcelona corridor. Analysts suggest this decision is commercially motivated, with Renfe aiming to bolster its competitiveness against these rivals.

Though Avlo will no longer serve Madrid-Barcelona, it will continue operations on other routes linking Madrid with cities like Valencia, Alicante, Malaga, Seville, and Gijón. Renfe also plans to enhance Ave services with premium features such as onboard dining, quiet seating areas, and access to club lounges, aiming to elevate the travel experience for passengers.
