Morocco-Spain cooperation dismantles transnational drug network
Authorities in Spain, in close collaboration with Moroccan police, have dismantled a major transnational drug trafficking network operating between Morocco and several European countries, ultimately targeting Belgium. The network reportedly used passenger buses to transport hashish across international borders, employing sophisticated methods to evade detection.
The operation, named “Anisakis,” led to the arrest of five individuals in multiple Spanish cities, including Almería, Roquetas de Mar, Vícar, and Melilla, where authorities also carried out searches. Investigators seized large quantities of drugs, vehicles, cash, and various technological equipment used by the network.
According to law enforcement, the group exploited legitimate bus companies, concealing drugs in hidden compartments within refrigeration systems to bypass customs inspections. In addition to drug trafficking, the investigation uncovered a complex money laundering scheme, resulting in the temporary seizure of bank accounts, vehicles, and real estate assets, with a total estimated value exceeding 2.8 million euros.
Authorities traced the network to an individual in northeastern France, near the Belgian border, who allegedly coordinated the European distribution of the drug shipments. Spanish officials emphasized that the success of the operation relied on close international cooperation, particularly with Moroccan law enforcement and customs authorities, which were crucial in monitoring the network and identifying its members.
