Ukraine tightens grip as Kupiansk counteroffensive encircles Russian forces

Ukrainian troops have strengthened their position around the strategic city of Kupiansk following a decisive counteroffensive that has left Russian forces encircled and isolated. The advance marks one of Kyiv’s most significant battlefield achievements in recent months, signaling renewed momentum amid tense diplomatic efforts with Western allies.

Ukrainian forces gain upper hand

Commanders on the ground reported a breakthrough as Ukrainian units cut key supply routes and reclaimed nearby settlements north of the city. The Khartiia Corps confirmed the liberation of Kindrashivka and Radkivka, effectively severing Russian logistical access to Kupiansk.

“Russian troops inside the city are now fully surrounded,” said Ihor Obolienskyi, commander of the Khartiia Corps, in a statement to national media. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi later announced that Ukrainian forces control nearly 90 percent of the city’s territory, though heavy fighting continues in the surrounding areas.

Moscow denies setbacks

Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov rejected claims of Ukrainian advances, describing them as “unsuccessful attempts” to retake fortified positions. Moscow insists its troops remain in control of key sectors, but satellite imagery and local reports suggest Russian units are facing mounting pressure as Ukrainian forces consolidate gains.

A battle over a critical hub

Kupiansk, located in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, remains a vital railway and logistics center connecting several front-line corridors. Captured by Russia at the onset of the invasion and retaken by Ukraine in 2022, the city has endured near-total destruction. Fewer than 500 civilians are estimated to remain after years of shelling and urban combat.

While independent verification of battlefield claims remains limited, the renewed Ukrainian push around Kupiansk highlights Kyiv’s determination to reclaim occupied territories and reinforce its negotiating position abroad.
