Morocco sees improvement in dam filling rates in December

Morocco has recorded a noticeable improvement in the filling rate of its dams in December, offering cautious optimism amid ongoing water stress. According to official government statements, reservoir levels rose to nearly one-third of total capacity by mid-December.

Water reserves increased over the course of the month, exceeding 5.5 billion cubic meters nationwide. Authorities noted that this figure represents a higher level than that observed during the same period last year, reflecting a modest recovery in water storage.

Since the beginning of the hydrological year in September, inflows into dams have reached several hundred million cubic meters. However, officials emphasized that the accumulated volume remains significantly below the long-term annual average, highlighting the persistence of structural water shortages.

Rainfall data shows that precipitation levels remain lower than normal, despite a slight improvement compared with the previous year. While recent rains have contributed to replenishing reservoirs, experts stress that sustained precipitation will be necessary to secure water supplies for agriculture, industry, and domestic use.

The government continues to monitor water resources closely, as Morocco faces recurring droughts and growing pressure on its water systems.
