Rabat to introduce amphibious buses to enhance Bouregreg tourism

The Moroccan capital is preparing to launch an innovative tourism initiative with the introduction of two amphibious buses designed to operate seamlessly on land and water along the scenic Bouregreg Valley.

The project, managed by Rabat Region Mobility, represents an estimated investment of MAD 23 million ($2.3 million), according to reports from local news outlets. These specialized vehicles will provide a unique dual-mode travel experience, offering panoramic views of the city’s iconic landmarks and riverside landscapes.

The amphibious buses, equipped with glass roofs for maximum visibility, will feature cutting-edge amenities, including multilingual audio guides synchronized for land and water tours, ergonomic seating, ventilation, connectivity, and accessibility features for individuals with reduced mobility. Their exteriors will also be treated to withstand marine corrosion, ensuring safe and durable operations in both environments.

The initiative is set to unfold over 50 months. The first phase, lasting 14 months, will focus on vehicle delivery and commissioning, while the second phase spans three years for maintenance and potential service expansion. Authorities aim to establish a structured tourist route connecting Rabat’s urban and river attractions, strengthening ties between the capital’s banks and enriching its tourism offerings.

Visitors will enjoy a fresh perspective on major landmarks such as the Kasbah of Oudayas, Hassan Tower, the Marina, and the Salé Medina quarters. This project aligns with the broader “Rabat, City of Lights, Cultural Capital of Morocco” strategy to position the city as a leading tourist destination.

If the initiative proves successful, additional vehicles may be introduced to expand the service, further cementing Rabat’s reputation for innovative and experiential tourism. The public tender for the project is expected to close by late December, with implementation commencing shortly thereafter. The amphibious buses symbolize Rabat’s commitment to sustainable tourism and urban mobility, blending technology and creativity to offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
