Obama urges Democrats to take AI risks seriously

Artificial intelligence is gradually emerging as a major political issue in the United States. Barack Obama believes that Democrats must now build a genuine strategy around this technology, whose rapid development could pose significant risks if not properly regulated.

According to reports from the New York Times, the former president recently warned about the speed at which AI is advancing in the hands of private companies. He called on Democratic leaders not to allow the debate on its regulation to develop without a true political framework.

Obama wants AI to be a major electoral issue

During a private fundraising meeting, Barack Obama reportedly encouraged Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the House of Representatives, to prepare for an in-depth public debate on artificial intelligence.

The former president wants Democrats to develop a clear policy stance on this technology, particularly in the event they regain control of the House in the upcoming midterm elections on November 3.

He also believes that AI should be a central topic in the platforms of candidates for the 2028 presidential election. For Obama, the stakes go far beyond mere technological innovation: they involve security, employment, and the economic transformations that could accompany the rise of artificial intelligence.

Growing concerns in the sector

The statements attributed to Barack Obama come as concerns about the potential dangers of AI are gaining traction in Washington as well as Silicon Valley.

Two researchers from Anthropic recently raised alarms about the consequences that could arise from a too rapid advancement of AI systems' capabilities. Concerns have also emerged regarding certain agents capable of performing complex operations, especially when they are likely to interact with external computer systems.

These worries are fueling calls to strengthen control mechanisms and rules applicable to companies developing the most advanced models.

Tech companies under pressure

The debate is taking on a new dimension with the positions taken by several industry leaders. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently urged AI companies to slow down certain efforts to enhance their models' capabilities.

This position comes as competition among major American players in artificial intelligence remains particularly intense. Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, as well as Elon Musk have also been involved in discussions about the risks associated with developing increasingly powerful systems.

For American policymakers, the challenge now is to find a balance between innovation, economic competitiveness, and the necessity to mitigate risks associated with rapidly evolving technologies.

A political battle is brewing

By pushing Democrats to include artificial intelligence in their agenda, Barack Obama is helping to make this issue a top political priority. The regulation of AI could thus become one of the key themes in the upcoming American electoral challenges.

The question is no longer solely about how to support innovation but also about corporate responsibilities, protecting the economy, and ensuring citizen safety. This debate could gain even more significance as the 2028 presidential election approaches.
