Philadelphia DA Takes Legal Action Against Musk's $1 Million Voter Giveaway
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk and his political action committee (PAC), America PAC, in an effort to halt a controversial initiative that promises a $1 million giveaway to registered voters. This legal move aims to stop what Krasner describes as an illegal lottery, asserting that the program violates both state and federal laws designed to protect the integrity of elections.
In the lawsuit, Krasner argues that the initiative is a deceptive scheme intended to lure citizens in Philadelphia and other swing states into providing personal information and making political pledges in exchange for a chance to win substantial cash prizes. He claims this constitutes an unlawful lottery under Pennsylvania law, which requires all lotteries to be regulated by the state.
The giveaway, which began earlier this month, awards $1 million daily to a registered voter who signs a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments. Additionally, Pennsylvania voters who participate receive $100 each. Musk has openly supported former President Donald Trump while promoting this initiative.
While federal law prohibits compensating individuals for voting, Musk insists that the giveaway is not aimed at incentivizing voter registration but rather at encouraging support for constitutional rights. Despite receiving a warning from the Justice Department regarding potential legal violations, Musk continues to defend the program, emphasizing its focus on constitutional advocacy rather than electoral participation.
This legal challenge underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding election integrity and the implications of financial incentives in political processes.
