Nice makes helmets mandatory for electric scooter riders starting November
Starting November 1, the city of Nice will impose a new rule requiring all electric scooter users to wear a helmet. The measure, announced by Mayor Christian Estrosi, is intended to reduce the rising number of accidents involving these vehicles, which he has described as “a danger” when used without proper safety precautions.
Any rider caught without a helmet will face a fine of €135. The municipality also indicated that repeat offenses could lead to penalties being doubled or even tripled.
Unlike other major French cities, Nice has chosen not to authorize self-service scooter rentals. The city has instead opted for stricter regulation, focusing on individual responsibility and enforcement. Authorities say this decision reflects ongoing concerns about traffic safety and the protection of pedestrians in crowded urban areas.
The new rule positions Nice as one of the first large French cities to enforce mandatory helmet use for scooters, a move that could inspire similar policies in other municipalities facing an increase in road accidents linked to personal mobility devices.
