Dutch students test a fully solar-powered ambulance in Kenya
A team of 23 students from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands has tested an innovative solar-powered ambulance in Kenya, offering a new approach to delivering healthcare in remote communities with limited access to electricity and medical facilities.
Known as Stella Juva, the vehicle was developed in partnership with Amref Health Africa. Unlike conventional ambulances, which primarily transport patients to hospitals, the solar-powered vehicle is designed to bring essential medical services directly to communities that are difficult to reach.
The ambulance uses solar panels installed on its roof, along with additional panels that can be extended from the sides when the vehicle is stationary. The electricity generated is used both to power the vehicle and operate a range of medical equipment, including an X-ray machine, ultrasound equipment, a defibrillator and systems for keeping vaccines refrigerated.
During field trials in Kenya's Narok region, Stella Juva travelled more than 800 kilometres across a combination of paved and rough roads. The vehicle reportedly encountered only a minor problem involving part of its steering system, which was repaired within around 30 minutes.
A two-day test conducted with Amref Health Africa also demonstrated the vehicle's ability to support medical activities for approximately 200 people. According to the project team, the ambulance generated more solar energy than it consumed while several medical devices were operating simultaneously.
The concept could be particularly valuable in areas where healthcare centres are far away and access to reliable electricity remains limited. By combining transportation, renewable energy generation and medical equipment in a single vehicle, the project aims to reduce some of the logistical barriers that prevent people in isolated communities from receiving timely care.
The vehicle can also support maternal and child healthcare. During community visits, healthcare workers can use its ultrasound equipment to examine pregnant women without requiring them to travel long distances to a hospital or clinic. This could help identify potential complications earlier and facilitate referrals when specialised treatment is required.
The project reflects a broader effort to use renewable energy and mobile technologies to improve healthcare delivery in regions facing infrastructure and energy challenges. Solar-powered medical vehicles could reduce dependence on fuel and conventional electricity supplies while allowing healthcare teams to operate in areas beyond the reach of traditional facilities.
Although Stella Juva remains an experimental project, its successful field testing highlights the potential of combining clean energy, electric mobility and mobile healthcare. Further development and investment could determine whether similar vehicles can eventually be deployed on a larger scale in remote communities.
