NATO jet scramble highlights rising tensions as Russian drones breach Polish airspace
NATO forces swiftly responded to multiple violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones, underscoring growing unease near the alliance's eastern borders. The incidents occurred amid Russia's extensive aerial campaign against Ukraine, further intensifying regional security concerns.
Dutch F-35s mobilized over Poland
Two Dutch F-35 fighter jets stationed in Poland were activated Tuesday night after Russian Shahed drones posed a potential threat to NATO airspace. According to a statement from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the jets were prepared to neutralize the drones if they entered allied territory. However, their intervention was ultimately unnecessary.
The F-35 deployment is part of a joint Netherlands-Norway mission that began in September to bolster NATO's air security in Eastern Europe. This marks the first time advanced fifth-generation F-35s have operated out of Poland under NATO’s direct command, a significant upgrade from earlier missions conducted with older aircraft.
Polish airspace breached by drones
Polish military officials confirmed that two drones entered the country’s airspace during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. General Maciej Klisz, Poland's operational forces commander, stated that while the incidents were closely monitored, the drones were deemed non-threatening and were not intercepted. The drones exited Polish territory without causing damage.
General Wieslaw Kukula, the Polish chief of staff, emphasized that national defense systems were on high alert throughout the episode. Dutch F-35s contributed to airspace monitoring during the breach, reinforcing NATO's commitment to safeguarding its eastern flank.
Escalation amidst Russian strikes on Ukraine
The drone incursions coincided with a large-scale Russian assault on Ukraine, involving over 500 drones and 24 missiles targeting critical infrastructure across 14 regions. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority of the attacks, but several strikes caused damage to energy and transport facilities, injuring four railway workers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strikes as a "massive assault" and called for continued international support to counter Russia’s aggression.
Heightened vigilance across NATO
Earlier incidents near Romania also illustrate NATO's heightened alertness. Last month, German Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled from a Romanian base after Russian strikes near the Romanian border. Though no airspace violations were reported, the mission highlighted NATO’s proactive stance in managing potential threats.
Poland has maintained increased vigilance since 2022, when a stray missile from Ukraine struck a Polish village, killing two civilians. As a staunch NATO member and vocal supporter of Ukraine, Poland remains critical to the alliance’s eastern security framework.
