Italy’s exports rise 9.8% year on year in June 2026
Italy recorded a strong increase in exports in June 2026, with overseas sales rising by 9.8% compared with the same month a year earlier, according to data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat).
Exports also increased by 1.6% compared with May, indicating continued growth in Italy’s international trade during the first half of the year. Imports followed a similar upward trend, increasing by 1.2% month on month and 13.2% compared with June 2025.
Trade with European Union countries was an important contributor to the monthly performance. Italian exports to EU markets increased by 6.7% from May, while shipments to countries outside the bloc declined by 3.6%.
On the import side, purchases from EU member states rose by 1.1% over the month, while imports from non-EU countries increased by 1.4%.
The annual figures showed broader growth across both European and non-European markets. Italian exports to EU countries increased by 15.1% compared with June 2025, while exports to markets outside the European Union grew by 4.1%.
Imports also recorded significant annual increases. Purchases from EU countries rose by 9.1%, while imports from non-EU markets jumped by 18.7%.
The figures underline the continued importance of international trade to the Italian economy. Italy has a highly diversified export base, with major industries including machinery, vehicles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food products, fashion and luxury goods.
Despite the stronger growth in imports, Italy maintained a positive trade balance in June. The country's trade surplus reached €4.232 billion during the month, reflecting the value of exports exceeding imports.
The latest figures will be closely watched as Italy navigates changing conditions in global trade, including fluctuations in energy and commodity prices, demand in major international markets and evolving trade relations within and beyond the European Union.
The June performance nevertheless points to sustained momentum in Italian exports, particularly toward European markets, which remain a central destination for the country's goods.
