Morocco emerges as strategic NATO partner in the southern neighborhood
Morocco has strengthened its position as a strategic partner for the NATO, according to the alliance’s 2025 annual report, highlighting its growing role in the southern neighborhood amid ongoing security challenges.
The report underscores a significant evolution in cooperation between NATO and its southern partners, with Morocco identified as a key actor in regional security. This recognition comes in the context of rising geopolitical tensions, persistent terrorist threats, and ongoing instability near southern Europe.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized the urgent need to enhance the military capabilities of allied nations, calling for increased defense budgets and faster production of military equipment, linking these efforts directly to the security and prosperity of member states.
Morocco has been actively involved in programs aimed at improving military training, particularly for non-commissioned officers, in collaboration with NATO and several African countries. The alliance also notes progress in implementing the Southern Neighborhood Action Plan, which focuses on collective security through a strategic, results-oriented approach.
The cooperation extends to political dialogue with Middle Eastern and North African partners, including Morocco, and concrete initiatives in counter-terrorism, control of small arms proliferation, and civil sector preparedness.
Recent operational exchanges include a visit by a NATO maritime command delegation led by Admiral Didier Malterre, which met with Moroccan Royal Navy officials, including Rear Admiral Mohamed Tahine, and inspected strategic infrastructures in Rabat. The delegation praised the professionalism and preparedness of Moroccan naval forces.
Beyond military collaboration, NATO and Morocco continue to cooperate in broader regional security issues, including maritime security, counter-terrorism, and migration management, underscoring Morocco’s growing importance in the alliance’s southern security architecture.
