Bulgaria vows cleaner elections amid anti-corruption crackdown
Bulgaria’s caretaker prime minister, Andrey Gyurov, has announced that the upcoming elections are expected to be among the cleanest the country has seen in recent years. The statement comes as authorities intensify efforts to combat vote buying, misinformation, and long-standing corruption concerns.
Appointed earlier this year following the resignation of the previous government after widespread protests, Gyurov has prioritized restoring public trust in democratic institutions. The elections, scheduled for April 19, are seen as a key test for the country’s political stability.
In recent weeks, law enforcement agencies have arrested dozens of individuals suspected of involvement in vote-buying schemes. Authorities reported that some suspects were found carrying cash and lists of potential voters, highlighting the scale of the issue that has historically affected Bulgarian elections.
Bulgaria, a member of the European Union, has often faced criticism over corruption and challenges to the rule of law. Reports from civil rights organizations have placed the country among those struggling to uphold democratic standards within the bloc.
Despite these concerns, Gyurov expressed optimism that increased enforcement measures and public awareness would lead to a more transparent electoral process. He also noted a rise in reports of electoral misconduct, which he interpreted as a sign that citizens are becoming more confident in reporting irregularities.
Low voter turnout has been another persistent challenge in Bulgaria’s recent elections, reflecting widespread political disillusionment. However, the interim prime minister indicated that early signs suggest a higher level of participation this time, as voters show renewed interest in shaping the country’s future.
If successful, the upcoming vote could represent a turning point for Bulgaria, strengthening public confidence and reinforcing democratic practices.
