Morocco’s International Date Festival highlights water resilience and oasis preservation

Morocco’s 14th International Date Festival has opened in the southern city of Erfoud, bringing renewed attention to the challenges of water scarcity and the preservation of the country’s traditional oasis systems. Running from October 29 to November 2, this year’s edition focuses on the theme “Sustainable Management of Water Resources: Foundation for Date Palm and Oasis Development.”

A major national and international gathering

Minister of Agriculture Ahmed El Bouari inaugurated the festival, organized by the Association of the International Date Fair in Morocco (ASIDMA) under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from the National Agency for the Development of Oasis and Argan Zones (ANDZOA).

Spanning over 40,000 square meters, the event features more than 230 exhibitors from Morocco and abroad and is expected to welcome over 90,000 visitors. Exhibitors include national institutions, private companies, and international delegations such as the United Arab Emirates.

During his visit, Minister El Bouari toured the national pavilions, agricultural innovation zones, and international stands showcasing best practices in irrigation, renewable energy, and sustainable farming technologies.

Focus on water stress and oasis ecosystems

This year’s theme underscores the urgency of addressing water stress, which threatens Morocco’s fragile oasis ecosystems, crucial reservoirs of biodiversity and natural barriers against desertification.

Organizers emphasized that these oases play a vital role in sustaining local economies, maintaining ecological balance, and enhancing resilience against climate change. The festival thus serves as both a celebration of Morocco’s date palm heritage and a platform for innovation, dialogue, and cooperation between local producers, investors, and international experts.

Investment and scientific innovation

The festival’s scientific and business programming reflects Morocco’s growing focus on sustainable agricultural investment. The Agricultural Development Agency and Crédit Agricole Group are co-hosting an investment forum under the theme “Responsible Investment for Date Palm and Oasis Development.”

A scientific symposium, jointly organized by INRA, ANDZOA, FAO, and ICARDA, gathers researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals to present innovative approaches for adapting oasis systems to climate change. Business-to-business sessions aim to encourage partnerships and joint ventures within the agricultural sector.

A pioneering water project for the desert regions

Minister El Bouari also inspected the Maktaa Sfa hydro-agricultural project, a major water management initiative designed to redirect floodwaters from the Gheris River toward Lake Merzouga.

With an investment of MAD 85.23 million (USD 9 million), the project will benefit nearly 6,770 residents and irrigate 1,194 hectares in the Rissani and Taous communes. The project’s infrastructure includes a 260-meter diversion dam, a 14-kilometer transfer canal, and a 2.6-kilometer irrigation network, complemented by upgrades to the Lake Merzouga dike and nearby systems.

Beyond irrigation, the initiative aims to restore vegetation cover, recharge groundwater, strengthen the resilience of oasis communities, and support eco-tourism by improving Lake Merzouga’s ecological and recreational capacity. The project aligns with Morocco’s “Generation Green 2020–2030” strategy, promoting sustainable and inclusive agricultural development.

A vibrant fair for culture, trade, and learning

The festival showcases the diversity of Morocco’s oasis culture through specialized exhibition zones. A livestock section features native sheep and goat breeds, while other areas highlight agricultural supplies, fertilizers, irrigation technology, and renewable energy solutions.

At the heart of the event lies the “Rahba” pavilion, a 3,000-square-meter commercial hub where cooperatives and producers present and sell date varieties and regional specialties. Another 300-square-meter section is dedicated to artisanal and local products from across Morocco’s oasis regions.

For younger visitors, an interactive educational zone introduces children to oasis ecosystems through hands-on experiences, fostering awareness of environmental sustainability and Morocco’s rich natural heritage.
